Do you remember the catastrophic train derailment that occurred on February 3, 2023, when a Norfolk Southern freight train carrying hazardous materials derailed, leading to a massive fire, chemical spill, and environmental crisis? Probably not.
Instead of fighting the fire, authorities thought it would be a great idea to conduct a controlled burn, of course, for safety reasons. So, for days, toxic chemicals flowed into the air and seeped into the ground. Let’s take a look at these chemicals, shall we?
- Vinyl Chloride: A highly flammable, carcinogenic gas used to produce PVC plastic; the primary chemical of concern due to its risk of explosion and release of toxic fumes when burned.
- Phosgene: A toxic gas formed as a byproduct when vinyl chloride burns; historically used as a chemical weapon, it can cause severe respiratory damage.
- Hydrogen Chloride: Another combustion byproduct of vinyl chloride; a corrosive gas that can irritate the respiratory system and form acid rain when released into the atmosphere.
- Ethylhexyl Acrylate: A flammable liquid used in plastics and adhesives; can cause irritation to skin, eyes, and respiratory system.
- Isobutylene: A flammable gas used in fuel additives and plastics; poses explosion risks and can cause dizziness or asphyxiation in high concentrations.
- Ethylene Glycol Monobutyl Ether: A solvent used in paints and cleaners; toxic if inhaled or ingested, causing respiratory and neurological effects.
- Butyl Acrylate: A flammable liquid used in paints and plastics; can irritate skin, eyes, and lungs, and is toxic in high exposures.
- Benzene: A carcinogenic chemical present in some of the cargo; a known cause of leukemia and other health issues with prolonged exposure.
Any intelligent person would know that East Palestine’s community would be devastated for years by this environmental disaster. Cancer-causing toxins seeping into the environment will destroy lives and nature for years to come. But, as usual, the government that we pay taxes to so they can protect us has once again failed.
The EPA conducted various tests in the community, and this is what they said at the time: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which oversaw the response, reported that these tests—along with their own—showed levels of chemicals like vinyl chloride, benzene, and dioxins to be below thresholds of concern for short-term exposure. LIE! LIE! LIE!
Guess what broke this weekend, May 31-June 1, 2025?
