Jimmy Watson, John McAfee's Bodyguard

Jimmy Watson, John McAfee's Bodyguard

The insane life of Jimmy Watson, from special forces to John McAfee.

If you haven't already, you should watch the full podcast with Shawn Ryan. Jimmy breaks down his whole life, from growing up in Texas to special forces, Blackwater, and the insane life of being John McAfee's bodyguard. It's disturbing how the FBI tried to destroy Jimmy's life while he was serving as a United States Navy SEAL. As someone who served in the military, this hits home regarding how veterans are treated.

A big part of the podcast was him talking about his time with McAfee, the wild ride, and the conspiracy theories about John's suicide and the dead man's switch, including the claim that 3 terabytes of files implicating United States government officials in horrendous crimes were hidden in the Champlain Towers South condominium in Surfside, Florida, which collapsed after John's death.

To follow what Jimmy is describing, it helps to know who McAfee was.

An Introduction to John McAfee

John David McAfee (18 September 1945 – 23 June 2021) was a British-American programmer and businessman who built one of the first commercial antivirus companies, then spent the rest of his life as a fugitive-style celebrity.

He was born in Cinderford, England, to an American soldier and a British mother, and grew up in the United States. In 1987 he founded McAfee Associates. Its software became a standard PC security product in the early internet era. He left the company in the mid-1990s after selling his stake for a reported fortune of more than $100 million. The McAfee brand later passed through other owners; he had no role in the company that still carries the name.

After software he drifted into eccentric projects: yoga, aerotrekking in open-cockpit ultralights in New Mexico and Arizona, and a compound in Belize. In November 2012 his neighbor Gregory Faull was shot dead there. Belize police named McAfee a person of interest. He denied involvement, fled by boat to Guatemala, and was deported to the United States. He was never charged in that killing.

Back in the US he ran for the Libertarian presidential nomination in 2016 and again in 2020, and became a loud cryptocurrency promoter. In October 2020 he was arrested in Spain on a US warrant. Federal prosecutors charged him with tax evasion for allegedly failing to file returns from 2014 to 2018 while earning millions, including from promoting cryptocurrencies. The SEC separately accused him of undisclosed paid crypto promotions. He had not been tried.

On 23 June 2021, hours after a Spanish court approved his extradition, he was found hanged in his cell at Brians 2 prison near Barcelona. He was 75. Catalan authorities and, in 2023, the Provincial Court of Barcelona ruled it suicide. His widow, Janice McAfee, disputed that and alleged he was killed. Spanish courts closed the case, saying the evidence pointed only to suicide.
