“If you don’t allow us to spy, we’ll imprison you!” This was the warning Pavel Durov, billionaire co-founder and CEO of the Telegram messaging app, reportedly received before his arrest. Durov was detained on Saturday evening at Bourget airport near Paris.
French authorities argue that Telegram’s lack of moderation, its limited cooperation with law enforcement, and the tools it provides (such as disposable numbers and encryption) render it complicit in drug trafficking, child exploitation, and fraud.
